Keeping up appearances

Yesterday I made a cake because my aunt and two cousins are coming over to check out our new baby. As I was preparing todays feast, I was thinking about how my "high tea gone bohemian" reminds me of "keeping up appearances".

I've always thought that show was hilarious, and it's one of the few tv shows my grandma watched religiously. 

For some reason right before we have people come over I start noticing how many stains the dogs made on our leather couch and how much hair gets in all the nooks and crannies of our house. Never mind the stains on the wall by the garbage can, the dust on the shelves and the cobwebs on the ceiling.

About an hour before guests are expected I start driving everyone in this house, including myself, insane with my last minute cleaning frenzy * sigh...*  This cake better be good after all this cleaning and dusting... Thank goodness I have a sign in my kitchen that says "my house was clean last week, sorry you missed it"

True love

I got this picture of my grandparents a little while after my grandmother passed away. It touches me every time I look at it. They loved each other so much and were a great example of what true love is all about.

I love those neat little finds when cleaning up. I was cleaning out my kitchen cabinets and found a never used vinyl table cloth I bought a while ago, because I fell in love with the flowered pattern. It was an impulse buy. We never even use a tablecloth, but I was hoping we would start using tablecloths now that we have such a nice one. But of course we never did...
I hate being wasteful, so I decided to make a chair cushion for our tripp trapp high chair. Our daughter just started eating "real" food, and as all moms know that gets somewhat messy. I thought it would be nice to have a cushion that you don't have to wash, but that you can just clean off with a wet cloth.  After working on a pattern for two full evenings, I managed to make a cushion all by myself, which is pretty amazing because I SUCK at sewing!
